How nitrogen plant works
Nitrogen generating plant taps atmospheric air which is compressed in the air separation unit. After the air is compressed it is sent into the cleanup systems where impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and moisture are removed. Now, the air gets moved into heat exchanger where it is cooled to extremely low temperature. Then, it is moved into a high pressure distillation column where nitrogen is separated from other gases. It is distilled till it meets industrial specifications. Nitrogen is deposited at the top of distillation column.
Nitrogen is known as the largest industrial gas used in the manufacturing of fertilizers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes and explosives. It is estimated that annually over 150 million tonnes of ammonia is produced. Nitrogen is mainly used for providing inerting atmosphere which is used for preservation of food and making of diodes and transistors. It is also used for annealing stainless steel products.
